Balmain was founded by fashion designer Pierre Balmain in 1945. Balmain's heritage was always in fashion with his father owning a curtain shop and his mother and sister owning a fashion boutique. Pierre would often work at the boutique and his own collection began initially with the narrow-waisted long flared skirts popular in the post-war era. Early admirers of Pierre Balmain's work helped raise the profile of the brand including the Duchess of Windsor who ordered pieces from the collection. Soon Pierre Balmain expanded his business to Australia and the United States the designer subsequently won the prestigious Neiman Marcus Fashion Award in 1955, and soon after designed outfits for the Queen Sikirit in Thailand after a tour of the United States in 1960.
Following Balmain's death in 1982, the collection was helmed by a number of different creative directors, including Oscar de la Renta. While maintaining the house founder’s tradition, it brought Balmain a new perspective on menswear. Today, the brand is led by Oliver Rousteingv as creative director, who through popular social media connections and traditional fashion shows, has taken the brand to new heights bringing youthful vitality to the latest Balmain menswear collection.
