Hidehiko Yamane founded Evisu in 1991, in Osaka Japan. The brand name is inspired by the Japanese God of prosperity, Ebisu. Initially, the brand focused on denim clothing manufactured using traditional methods. At this time signature branding elements such as the kanome seagull emblem were handpainted onto the garments by Yamane himself. This labour-intensive production method only allowed around 14 pairs of jeans to be made per day. However, Hidehiko’s meticulous process quickly gained popularity amongst the Japanese public who are highly detail-oriented.
